GS Giants April Newsletter
Oh my, where have the last few months gone?
It seems like yesterday we were watching the leaves turn colors, what little we do see in South Alabama. Not to rub it in but living in the South we get to ride year around. My problem is choosing to either take the doors off the Jeep or ride my GS. Like my sticker on the back of my truck says, “I don’t always ride to work but when I do, I ride a GS. Stay upright my friends”. I did give a motorcycle wave to the BMW MOA Vice President (Reese Mullins) the other day as we passed on one of the few twisty roads here in LA (Lower Alabama). Although I was in my Jeep, he recognized me and returned the wave. We’ve worked together for years flying helicopters for the U.S. Army and We’ve even gotten him off-road once! just to see how the other half lives. His career in the dirt was short lived as street tires didn’t do so well on the wet Alabama red-clay-back-roads. I’ve offered my 650 Dakar for him to join us but he likes the pavement and wave’s farewell as we turn off the hardstand and get dirty. The important part is to get out and ride when and where you can all while doing it safely.
GS Giants Rallies.
Your board of directors is working hard to prepare for the upcoming year. Past month we had MMM California and MMM Tennessee. Coming up, the OZ Rally in May, MOA in June, the Go Big Rally (4 Corners) in August, STRSS and RA in September, Ribfest in October and MOM in November. I know I didn’t mention all the events this year but these are the main events your GS Giants will be supporting and attending. Check out the web page for the latest information on events and locations: http://mms.gsgiants.com/members/calendar5.php?org_id=GSGI
Speaking of events, we will be asking for volunteers to assist with both the MOA and RA rallies in helping to build a track. We won’t be going overboard with our normal competition but instead will assist them in track build and wranglers etc. We will have a presence there with our awning, maybe some swag to sell, maybe some beverages to drink, you know, the important stuff. As always, if you can give up some free time to help set-up, tear-down, build or wrangle, we appreciate our GS Giants in more ways than we could ever voice.
The Sigrid Sackman Memorial Scholarship for Off-road Motorcycle Training.
A Go Big Thank You! is due to all of you who purchased raffle tickets for the Skunkwerks Grom last year. We raised enough money to start our Sigrid Scholarship which will be given away at the Go Big Rally (4 Corners) in Colorado.
A total of 4 winners will be selected for riders training at one of the three BMW off-road Academy’s; BMW Performance Center in Greer, SC., Dragoo Adventure Rider Training (DART) Norman, OK. or RawHyde Adventures at either Castaic, CA or Colorado facility. See our GS Giant website for Information and application. Again this year we are raffling a Skunkwerks Grom, tickets go on sale at MMM and will be available at events and on-line until the winning ticket is drawn at Ribfest 2019, winner need not be present.
